Instructions for contributors to The Journal
Policy
The Journal welcomes academic contributions concerning both arts and sciences related to nature and wildlife conservation. Prior publication or concurrent submission to other refereed journals precludes publication in The Journal.
Page Charges, Copyrights
Current policies and charges are included in a document sent from the editor to authors when manuscripts are accepted. If a manuscript that has not been published is accepted for publication, authors and/or their employers must transfer their full copyright interests exclusively to The Wildlife Conservation Society.
Manuscript and Copies
Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced, with 4 cm margins, on good quality, non-erasable paper of standard size (A4 or 8.5 × 11 inch). Do not hyphenate at the right margin. In the top left corner of page 1, type the name, complete address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the person who is to receive editorial correspondence. On succeeding pages, type the senior author's last name in the top left corner, the page number in the top right corner. Keep one copy. Submit three xerographic (preferred) copies. Do not fold any copy.
Abstract and Key Words
Each research paper, review article, analytical essay or research note should have an abstract of no more than 300 words (200 for a note). The abstract should state concisely the goals, methods, principal results, and major conclusions of the paper. Incomplete and uninformative descriptions (e.g., "a new method of analysis was given" should not be included the abstract. Acronyms are not permitted in the abstract. Add six key words for indexing, characteristic of the paper.
Footnotes
Use only for E-mail and author's address if it differs from the byline address, and in tables.
Scientific Names
Do not use in the title or for names of domesticated animals or cultivated plants. In the abstract and the text the first mention of a vernacular name should be accompanied by its scientific name (parentheses are not required).
Measurement Units
Use metric units. For conversions of trade terms and terms that may be ambiguous, show English equivalents in parentheses.
References
Within text, references should be named sequentially by date (e.g. Lent 1974, 1975, Martin 1991, Avery and Decker 1994). Show page numbers for quotations, paraphrases, and for citations in books or bulletins, unless the reference is to the entire publication. Cite unpublished reports (parenthetically in the text) only if essential.
Literature Cited
Do not use abbreviations in Literature Cited. Arrange the references alphabetically according to the following system:
For periodicals
Avery, M. L. and D. G. Decker (1994) Responses of captive fish crows to eggs treated with chemical repellents. Journal of Wildlife Management 58: 261-266.
For books
Meyers, L. S. and N. E. Grossen (1974) Behavioral Research: Theory, Procedure, and Design. W. H. Freeman & Co., San Francisco, California, 355pp.
For edited books
Martin, T. E. (1991) Breeding productivity considerations: what are the appropriate habitat features for management? In: Hagen, J. and D. J. Johnson (eds.); Conservation of Neotropical Migrants. Smithsonian Institute, Washington D. C., pp.455-473.
For proceedings
Lent, P. C. (1974) Mother-infant relationships in ungulates. In: Geist, V. and F. Walther (eds.); The Behavior of Ungulates and its Relation to Management. Proceedings of the IUCN symposium, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, IUCN Publication new series 24: 14-55
When referring to articles written in languages other than English, give the title in the original language. If the article contains an English summary or abstract give the language and the title of the summary or abstract in parentheses after the original title (In "language" with an English summary or abstract). If the article does not contain an English summary or abstract, give the language in brackets after the reference.
Tables and Figures
Each must be self-explanatory and be referenced in the text. Preparation for column width (74 mm) is preferred over that for page width (155 mm). Avoid repeating information among tables, figures and text.
Tables.
Start each table on a separate page and continue long tables onto subsequent pages. Double space throughout; omit vertical lines; leave margins of at least 3 cm. Avoid unusual abbreviations. Identify footnotes by roman letters, or asterisks for probabilities. Percentages shown for cursory comparison should have only one or two significant digits. Do not show percentages based on small samples (n < 26).
Figures.
Type captions on a separate page, in paragraph form. On the back of each figure, lightly write the senior author's name, figure number, and "Top." Few photographs are accepted. These should be unmounted, sharply focused, high contrast prints on glossy paper not larger than 10 × 12.5 cm. Submit three prints of each picture. Color photographs should be avoided, but may occasionally be accepted at the cost of the author. The submitted original or copies of any figure must be no larger than 232 × 300 mm. A drawing will be reduced to 74 mm wide unless it is much wider than its height or exceptionally detailed. The best scale is 1.5 times the reduced size. Make all letters and numbers large enough to be at least 1.5 mm tall when reduced. Lettering style and size when reduced should be the same in all figures. Typed labels are not acceptable. Keep clear contrast between screens in illustrations. Computer-generated graphics must be of very high quality, with sharp, black lines and wttering of a size suitable for reduction. Xerographic copies are acceptable with duplicates of the manuscript.
Review of Manuscripts
The manuscripts submitted are sent to at least two reviewers. Authors are encouraged to provide the names and addresses of no more than four people qualified to review the manuscript, but who have no close working relationships with the authors. The identity of reviewers will be kept confidential, and the editor reserves the right to select reviewers other than those suggested by the authors.
